Olympic Pictogram
ART 127–Graphic Symbolism
This design project was geared to creating Olympic sports-oriented pictograms that represent various aspects of the historical tradition of The Olympics in-conjunction with a proposed host city for the event. When requested to select a host city, my choice was Honolulu, Hawaii. Contained within the finished pictogram designs are traditional aspects of quilt-making culture seen throughout the islands of Hawaii. These quilt-like patterns were contemporized to reflect the various sports of The Olympics, and in particular, those that are Hawaiian-centric because of Hawaii’s unique geography of both mountainous areas and coastal shorelines. Ocean-based sports such as surfing and sailing were used in these textile representations, as well as the historical component of Hawaiian sovereignty as a nation.
